Jakob Söderbaum takes over the helm at Stockholms Reparationsvarv

Stockholms Reparationsvarv will have a new CEO when Jakob Söderbaum assumes the role. At the same time, the current CEO Ludwig Lindkvist will move on to a new role within the owner company Lazarus Industriförvaltning, with a focus on defence-related investments and acquisitions.

Ludwig Lindkvist has been CEO of Stockholms Reparationsvarv for almost two years. Under his leadership, the business has continued to develop as one of Sweden’s leading repair yards, with services in areas such as maintenance, repair, modification and lifetime extension of ships.

“Ludwig has done a much appreciated job at Stockholms Reparationsvarv and we are pleased that he is now taking the next step within Lazarus. His experience and military background will be valuable as we strengthen our focus on investments in defence-related industry,” says Martin Alsander, Lazarus Industrial Management.

The new CEO will be Jakob Söderbaum, who has extensive experience of leading and developing companies. He has previously been CEO of Lazarus-owned BrandFactory and Nordic Brass Gusum, among others, and has also held several senior positions in Swedish business.

“Jakob has extensive experience of industrial operations and company development. Stockholms Reparationsvarv is in a market with growing demand and great opportunities, not least in the public and defence-related sectors. I look forward to continuing to develop the shipyard’s capacity and position together with Jakob and his employees,” says Gunnar Wieslander, Chairman of the Board of Stockholms Reparationsvarv.

Stockholms Reparationsvarv (SRV) has been commissioned to carry out a comprehensive technical upgrade of the Swedish Transport Administration’s road ferry Neptunus. The assignment includes both energy efficiency improvements and preparations for future autonomous operation – a key milestone in the shipyard’s ongoing contribution to the maritime green transition. The project involves the installation of modern systems that reduce environmental impact and optimize vessel performance. At the same time, Neptunus is being prepared for a higher level of autonomy, paving the way for smarter, safer, and more sustainable ferry transport.

“Being entrusted by the Swedish Transport Administration with such a forward-looking project is a strong endorsement of our technical expertise and our ability to deliver sustainable solutions at sea,” says Ludwig Lindkvist, CEO of SRV.

The Queen of the Archipelago, S/S Norrtelje, Gets a Facelift at Beckholmen

In November, the “Queen of the Archipelago,” S/S Norrtelje, was towed to Beckholmen for a major renovation. The ship’s 120-year-old bottom plates are severely corroded and need to be replaced.
“The biggest challenge is merging the old with the new,” says Martin Adevik, production manager at Stockholm Repair Yard.

In the eastern dock at Beckholmen, an intensive effort is underway to replace the rusty bottom plates of S/S Norrtelje. The old plates are being cut away with a cutting torch and replaced with new ship steel.
“Virtually the entire bottom needs to be replaced,” says Martin Adevik.

An ultrasound examination at Beckholmen revealed that the ship’s plating had rusted and needed to be replaced. The ship’s frames, which form its structural backbone, were also corroded and required replacement.

Beckholmen’s Long Maritime History

Beckholmen has been a hub for shipyard operations since the 1600s. The island was named after the tar distillery that once operated there, where tar was boiled into a more viscous pitch used for sealing ship hulls and barrels—a valuable export commodity.

“When we decontaminated the island in 2012 and started digging, we could still smell freshly boiled tar,” says Martin Adevik.

A 120-Year-Old Time Capsule

While removing the old ship plates, workers discovered tools, wedges, and rivets at the keel—items that had been dropped and lost during the ship’s original construction.

“It was too narrow at the bottom, so they couldn’t retrieve them. It’s a 120-year-old time capsule,” says Martin Adevik.

The renovation is expected to be completed by mid-February. Once ice conditions allow, S/S Norrtelje will be towed back to its home port in Norrtälje.

After Three Years of Waiting: Beckholmen’s Dry Dock Gets a New Gate!

After more than three years of intensive work, the Gustav V dry dock at Beckholmen is now equipped for the future with a brand-new, state-of-the-art gate. The historic dry dock, built over a century ago to support the Swedish Navy, has long been a vital part of Sweden’s maritime industry. The Navy remained at Beckholmen until the 1960s, when maintenance and dry-docking operations moved to the newly constructed Muskö naval base, where ships could be serviced in a protected environment.

In the early 1990s, Beckholmen saw a revival when Stockholm Repair Yard AB (SRVAB) took over and restored the facility. Since then, the shipyard has been a key player in Swedish ship repair, with the Gustav V dry dock continuing to play an important role. However, one of the most critical components for dock safety—the gate that keeps seawater out—had reached the end of its technical lifespan. After nearly a century of service, it was finally time in 2020 to begin the process of replacing the worn-out gate.

A Technical Challenge

Finding a replacement for a nearly 100-year-old gate was no easy task. After a thorough selection process, the Dutch shipyard Ravestein was chosen for the prestigious assignment of constructing a new gate. Designed to ensure the continued operation of the dry dock and provide safety for both personnel and vessels for at least another 100 years, the new gate was a crucial investment.

Over the course of nine days, the fully constructed gate was towed from Rotterdam to Beckholmen, arriving in mid-August. After a week of rigorous testing and staff training, the gate was officially handed over to Stockholm Repair Yard and put into operational use. This new gate represents not just a technical upgrade but also an investment in a sustainable and secure working environment for the future.

A Grand Inauguration Despite the Rain

The official inauguration of the new gate was celebrated in grand style. Despite rain and gray skies, the atmosphere was lively among guests and staff. Customers, subcontractors, and employees gathered to commemorate the hard work that went into completing the project. The festivities featured an impressive barbecue buffet, prepared by none other than Magnus, a former world champion from the Swedish Culinary Team, adding a special touch to the occasion.

The inauguration of the new gate marks a significant milestone for Stockholm Repair Yard and Beckholmen’s rich maritime history. With modern technology and precision, the dry dock will continue to play a vital role in Swedish shipping—now securely prepared for generations to come.
